Counselling Relationship

Is Counseling for Me?
Frequently I hear a variety of reasons in why people avoid seeking counseling or therapy. It seems like the most common reasons I’ve heard in which people avoid counseling are the following:
- What will people thing?
- Nobody will understand, especially a stranger
- I don’t have the time
- It’s too costly
- I’ve been fine without it so far
- Counseling means I’m “weak”
- I’ve tried it once, and it didn’t work
- It seems uncomfortable
Most people have likely heard of many of the above reasons to avoid counseling or therapy. Yet, time and time again after I counsel reticent clients they convey appreciation for insight gained and proud that they went. Choosing to go to counseling is not an easy process for some. Yet most individuals can benefit from being heard and validated.
Our society is so fast-paced, technology driven that counseling can offer a safe venue to explore anxieties, Relationships, stress, sadness. A good and professional counseling Relationship is healing and can teach at the client’s own pace about exploring perhaps insecurities or fears. Counseling or therapy can be an invaluable “authentic” relationship in such a technology based society. The face-to-face aspect of therapy in itself can be a wonderful way to build trust, increase social skills, assertiveness, emote and a place to feel validated.
I’ve worked for over 6 years counseling full-time the U.S. Military, and it is an amazing honor to counsel those who serve our country selflessly. More times than I can count, U.S. service members have conveyed their surprise at how “talking” and counseling was beneficial to them.
In summary, making the decision to go to counseling can be fascinating journey. We all have times in our lives where we feel overwhelmed, discouraged, and conflicted. It is a commitment to yourself to say I am worthwhile, and following through with a decision to find a counselor that suits your style is important.
So why not you? If you have been feeling overwhelmed, or living in negative patterns, or depressed it is a brave decision to seek help. When the mind feels good, the body feels better. Just as when the body feels good, the mind feels better.
